What we heard from you

“West Maui needs a community just like this. Even if I don?t get a home, maybe my children will get a new elementary school.”

What We Heard from You

Throughout the design and planning process, the hopes and aspirations that community members shared resulted in five design principles emerging:

At the on-site studio, the design team worked
    on synthesizing the community's ideas
    into one plan.

  1. A compact, sustainable community

Create genuine neighborhoods, not just subdivisions, which contain a mix of uses and housing types to accommodate a wide variety of people and activities. A compact community respects the land on which it is placed by protecting and restoring natural amenities.

  2. Affordable housing with dignity

Provide a variety of affordable housing options integrated into complete neighborhoods.

  3. Mixed uses for livability

Include neighborhood-serving commerce, but no "strip malls"

  4. Each group drew their own ideas for the site.

  5. True Hawai'i

Value traditional Hawaiian architecture, the landscape, the climate, important views, outdoor life, and the principle of mālama'aina

  6. Connectedness

Make it walkable and bike-friendly. Incorporate networks of green space, streets and trails into the neighborhood. Encourage people-to-people contact.
